I = intervention
C = comparison
O = outcome
T = time / type
Not all PICOT components are mandatory. This example is about newly graduated nurses (population) and mentoring (intervention) and its effect on work engagement (outcome). PICOT search acts as free text search, it does not search for subjects headings in CINAHL Headings thesaurus.
