Google Scholar: Guide

Full text articles are available

• via computers in Oulu University or Oamk network
• via VPN connection
• off campus by logging in using University of Oulu or Oamk username (Haka Login)

OR with Library Links

1. sign in Google Scholar with your Google username
2. select Settings
3. select Library links
4. in Show library access links for search Oulu
5. choose University of Oulu... OR Oulu University of Applied Sciences... and Save.

The search targets the full texts of publications by default. In search results sorted by date, the search can be focused on abstracts.

No additional symbol required to find alternative endings for search terms:

diet > diet, diets, dieting, dietary

Double quotation marks = exact phrase

• the singular form of a word does not retrieve the plural form in phrases
  "information system" > information system
• searching for known publication
  "Multiresolution gray-scale and rotation invariant texture classification with local binary patterns" 

​​​​​​​Add an asterisk within a search as a placeholder for any unknown or wildcard terms:

• "energy ** policy" > energy technology innovation policy

Search terms are automatically combined using AND:

robotics kindergarten

Word order matters. Google ranks the first word slightly higher than the second, the second slightly more than the third, etc.

telomere cancer results are slightly different from the search cancer telomere

OR must be in capital letters:

"participatory design" OR "cooperative design" OR "co-operative design"

Hyphen (-) excludes word or site in the results:

virus OR viruses -computer
monikulttuurisuus päiväkoti -site:theseus.fi

Where my words occur in the title of the article aka allintitle:

Refining and sorting

• Limit by publication year.
• Sort by relevance.
• Sort by date: returns publications from last year. In search results sorted by date, the search can be focused on abstracts.
• Review articles.
   

• Save publications into My library or Reading list
  • Google Scholar Reading list: Save papers to read later.
• Cite: ready to use citations e.g. APA.
• Cited by: number of times a document has been cited by other documents. 
• Related articles: explore similar articles.
• All n versions: other versions of the publication in different sites.

Alerts

Periodically get emails about newly published papers that match your search criteria.

Mendeley

• with Mendeley Web Importer in search result list
• from My Library.

RIS format (Covidence, Mendeley etc.)

• Please note that exports from Google Scholar do not include abstracts. 
• Click Cite and then RefMan, which makes the RIS file.
