PubMed Guide: Exporting citations to citation management system

Saving and sharing search results

  • Citations in PubMed can be sent to e-mail, exported to reference management system, saved in My NCBI account or shared f.ex. in Twitter.

Export to Mendeley

 

1. Web Importer
  • Web Importer works best when you exporting smaller amount of citations.
  • In PubMed results view click Web Importer icon, choose citations and click Add.
  • It may take some time before you get all citations in Web Importer. Check that citations are correct. 

 

     

In addition:

  • Single citations can be exported by dragging PDF files directly to Mendeley.
  • Single citations can be added manually (Add new -> Add entry manually). You can search with PMID identifier to get citation information.

 

2. Exporting large amounts of citations:

Export citations to Mendeley Desktop.  Mendeley does not support Desktop any more and it cannot be installed. However, if you have previously installed Desktop to your device, you can continue using it for now. 

1. Choose citations in PubMed. If you are exporting all results or all results on the page, start with step 2.

2. Click Save and choose PubMed format.

 

 

3. Txt-file is saved in downloads in your device.

4. In Mendeley Desktop choose Add Files and import the file.

 

Alternative way:

1.  Choose citations in PubMed. If you are exporting all results or all results on the page, start with step 2.

2. Click Send to, choose Citation manager and Create file.

You can also export citations first to Covidence and from Covidence to Mendeley. Covidence guide.  University of Oulu has access to Covidence, but not Oulu University of Applied Sciences.
