CINAHL: Saving references and search strategies

Saving and e-mailing references

  • References can be e-mailed, saved or exported to a reference management software (e.g. Mendeley).
  • References can also be saved to your own MyEBSCO account (see "Saving your search strategy" below).
  • Select the references and action you want. You can select up to 50 references at a time. You can change the number of references displayed on the page from the drop-down menu, e.g. Show: 50. If you want to transfer a larger reference amount e.g. to the Covidence tool, see the instruction for bulk export below.

The exporting and saving options are shown above the search results:

  • Download = save references as a file. Icon = Down Arrow
  • Save = save the references to your MyEBSCO account. Icon = Bookmark
  • Add to project = save references to your MyEBSCO account under the project you created. Icon = Folder
  • Share = share references via Google Drive or OneDrive (Share) or email (Email). Icon = Right Arrow
  • Cite = copy the references (Copy citation) or send the references to a reference manager (Export citation). Icon = Quotation mark

Exporting references to Mendeley or Covidence

  • Select references and click Cite -> Export citation. Select RIS-format.

Bulk export from results list (up to 25,000 items)

HOX! At the moment bulk export does not always work correctly. Files can include irrelevant or duplicate references when exporting results f.ex. to Mendeley or Covidence.

  • It is possible to download thousands of records from CINAHL at once (max. 25 000 references).
  • To use this bulk export feature, you must be signed in to your personal MyEBSCO account. In addition, you can use this feature 4 times within a 24 hour period. After the 24 hour period has passed, you can resume using the bulk export feature.

  1. Click the drop-down arrow at the top of the result list and click the Export results (Up to 25,000) link.
  2. Enter your E-mail address and select a preferred export format from the options below. (usually RIS format)
  3. Click Send
  4. EBSCO e-mails you a link to download an export file which you can import into your reference manager. The link will be available for download for 7 days, after which it will no longer work.
  • Note: The number of results downloaded can be up to 25,000, but may be lower depending on your institution's permissions, duplicates and publisher restrictions.
