Truncation and wildcard

* replaces 0-5 characters

teach*  > teach, teacher, teaching..., NOT: teacherpreneurs, teachability, teachership...
child*  > child, children's, childhood..., NOT: childbearing, childlessness...

[*n] replaces n characters, n 0-20

econom[*20]  > economy, economics, economically, econometrics...

? replaces 0-1 character

organi?ation* > organization, organisational, organizationally
humo?r[*20]  > humor, humour, humorousness...

Phrases

Double quotation marks

Wildcards can be used in the end of the phrase.

The singular form of a word does not retrieve the plural form.

"out-of-hospital" > out-of-hospital, out of hospital
"rangifer tarandus tarandus"
"defence organisation" > defence organisation
"corporat* profit*" > corporate profits, corporational profitability

Using double quotation marks and curly brackets:

"{defence organisation}" > defence/defense organisation, defence/defense organizations, defence/defense organisation's, defence/defense organizations'

Use wildcard and truncation:

"defen?e organi?ation*" > defence/defense organisation, defence/defense organizations, defence/defense organisation's, defence/defense organizations', defence/defense organizational...

Hyphenated words

Hyphenated form finds hyphenated and non-hyphenated forms.

Non-hyphenated form is treated as separate words.

Some hyphenated words are also written combined. With these you must use OR operator.

talk-show > talk-show, talk show, talk-shows, talk shows
multi-profession* OR multiprofession*

Boolean operators

Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT are not case sensitive.

Terms in the same search field are processed as an AND operation.

wind power on sama kuin wind AND power on sama kuin wind and power

Without parentheses operator precedence is: 1. PRE, 2. NEAR, 3. AND, 4. OR, 5. NOT.

Use parentheses to override operator precedence. The expression inside the parentheses is executed first.

heart AND (attack OR failure)
(wind OR solar) AND (power OR energy)
(biodiesel* or "bio oil*") and energ*

Proximity operators

NEAR/n or N/n regardless of the order, n ≥ 0

energy near/5 polic*
(speech OR language) N/5 ( disabilit* OR disorder* OR impairment*)

PRE/n or P/n in the order in which you entered them, n ≥ 0

special pre/2 education > special education, special needs education
(sme OR smes OR smb OR smbs) OR ((small* OR medium*) PRE/3 (business* OR compan* OR enterpris* OR firm* OR corporation*))

Tips

  • Anywhere: searches also full texts if the database used  provides full texts.
  • Any terms retrieved using either truncation or wildcard characters are not considered when sorting your results based on relevance.
  • When the Show results outside my library’s subscription checkbox is selected, search results will expand to include relevant ProQuest content outside the library’s subscription alongside entitled content.
  • Select the Peer reviewed checkbox to limit your search to journals that has evaluation by people in the same field in order to maintain quality.

Creating a RIS file in ProQuest databases

  • To export references from the database, first create a personal user account in ProQuest.
  • Not all databases allow exporting references. Check the list of these databases on ProQuest's website.

1. Sign into My Research

2. By default, 20 items are displayed per page. You can increase this number at the bottom of the page ("Items per page"). This makes selecting references easier.

3. Select the references. If you want to export all references, you can folder the references page by page. Finally, click the folder icon ("Selected Items").

4. In folder view, click the three dots ("All save and export options").

5. Choose RIS format

6. The RIS file will be found in your device's downloaded files.
