Goals and principles of open and responsible science

The goals of responsible open science practices are to:

  • Promote the quality and transparency of science and research through good scientific practices
  • Increase the societal impact of scientific research for the benefit of all
  • Support practices that foster responsibility, equality, diversity, and non-discrimination
  • Take into account the ecological, social, economic, and cultural dimensions of sustainable development

In practical research work, openness is pursued according to UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science in the following areas:

  • Open scientific knowledge, including
    • Open research publications
    • Research data
    • Educational resources
    • Source codes and open-source software
    • Hardware
  • Open infrastructures
  • Open engagement of societal actors
  • Open dialogue with different communities

Guidelines for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK) emphasise ensuring the quality and transparency of research at all stages of the research process, as well as taking responsibility and showing respect toward those involved in or affected by research or its results. These principles also form the basis of the University of Oulu's guidelines for Responsible Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in Research. These guidelines advise researchers, among other things, to familiarise themselves with the limitations of the tools, to consider which stages of the research process they are suitable for, and to appropriately disclose their use. The guidelines also emphasise the researcher’s responsibility regarding ethical principles, data protection, and quality assurance.
