Publication metrics refers to the quantitative analysis of publications resulting in statistical data. In spoken language the term bibliometrics is often used. Publication metrics focuses on the number of publications and citations they have received. These are also the basis of so-called impact indicators. Publication metrics can be applied not only to scientific publications, but also to professional publications and publications for the general public, as well.
Publication metrics are used for many purposes such as recruitment processes, research strategies and assessment of research of organizations.
The University of Oulu is committed to the responsible use of publication metrics, which is taken into account throughout this guide. In this guide, you will find available databases, services, and visualizing tools. A brief introduction to bibliometric indicators and reporting bibliometric analysis is also included. Information specialists at the library provide bibliometric services. The team performs bibliometric analyses free of charge to support decision-making in faculties, research units and research groups. They also provide guidance, counseling and training.
