Open and Responsible Research Guide: Open access publishing costs and APC discounts

What are Article Processing Charges (APC)?

Article processing charges (APC) are costs of immediate open access. These fees differ by publisher and journal. Some of the journals that require APC are fully open (Gold OA), while some - the so called hybrid journals - can make individual articles open access when an APC is paid.

Open access publishing costs and APC discounts for researchers at the University of Oulu

Research units are responsible for open access fees. However, several journal agreements include open access discounts where the corresponding authors can publish open access articles without having to pay the APC or they might get a discount. You are entitled to a discount if the corresponding author of an article is affiliated to the University of Oulu or Oulu University Hospital.

The conditions and processes for utilizing the benefits differ by publisher. Note that some agreements include a predefined quota of articles that might run out before the agreement term ends. Additionally, in most cases open access discounts only apply when the article has been be accepted for publication during the agreement term. Information on ongoing negotiations can be found here.
