Affiliation refers to the organization in which the author works or is affiliated. One or more affiliations may appear in the publication if the author has multiple organizational connections. The University of Oulu is marked as an affiliation when the publication is based on research or expert work done there.
The publication must be associated with the organisation in which the research behind it was mainly carried out even if the author had moved to another organisation before the publication was published. University connection is primarily defined on the basis of the affiliation indicated by the author.
Affiliation details must be provided consistently and comprehensively to ensure that publications are correctly attributed to both the organization and the author, for example in publication data collection and research evaluation.
Affiliation also plays a role in open access (OA) publishing. If the corresponding author wishes to benefit from OA agreements negotiated by the library with academic publishers, the affiliation must be clearly indicated. Many publishers offer OA options only based on the first-listed affiliation—other affiliations may not be considered. Therefore, it is important that the University of Oulu affiliation is valid at the time the article is accepted for publication. Read more about OA agreements.
Use the official full names of organizations and their units. Avoid abbreviations and ensure the accuracy of names. It is recommended to include both the unit and the university's full names in the affiliation—mentioning only one may not be sufficient.
Indicate your own organization as the affiliation in the publication if the work is based on research or expert activity conducted there. The recommended format is:
Your name, Research Unit, University, City, Country
Examples:
Riitta Researcher, Library, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland
Riitta Researcher, Kirjasto, Oulun yliopisto, Oulu, Suomi
Note: Researchers affiliated with both the university’s Faculty of Medicine and the Wellbeing Services County of North Ostrobothnia must clearly include both affiliations in their publications.
