Description of the Natural Language Search (NLS) Feature
NLS allows users to perform searches using natural language queries, enhancing the search experience by understanding and processing queries in a more intuitive way. When a user initiates a search using NLS mode, the query is sent to a Large Language Model (LLM). The LLM assesses both the intent and context of the query, combining enhanced AI capabilities with EBSCO's existing search algorithm.
AI Data Use
NLS does not use user data for training. The data provided to the AI is based on the user's natural language query at the time of the search. No user information is stored during this process. The AI processes the query to enhance search results without retaining any personal data.
Is NLS mode available in the EBSCO Mobile App?
In the EBSCO Mobile App, NLS mode is utilized when it is set as the default search mode for the profile being searched. However, user-facing options to switch between search modes are not available in the app.
Does the AI Natural Language Search mode require personal user accounts?
No, personalization into MyEBSCO accounts is not required to use NLS mode.

How AI Insights are generated
AI Insights summaries are generated of full-text articles by prompting a Large Language Model to summarize insights from the specific article the user selected AI Insights for. The AI Insight prompt uses a method called Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to reduce hallucinations. EBSCO also reviews a representative sample of AI Insights with Subject Matter Expert (SME) Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) for biases, tone, accuracy, and timeliness of Insights as a quality and responsible AI metric.
Which Records have AI Insights?
Some records might not display a “Generate AI Insight” button. These are cases where the content is too short, or a publisher might not have granted permission.

Languages / Globalization
AI Insights are available in the language of the interface, regardless of the full-text language. Example: If the full-text article is in Chinese and the user selected French as the interface language, the AI Insight will be auto-translated into French. We ask researchers to verify the correctness of the AI-generated and translated text.
