Goals and principles of open and responsible science

The goals of responsible open science practices are to:

  • Promote the quality and transparency of science and research through good scientific practices
  • Increase the societal impact of scientific research for the benefit of all
  • Support practices that foster responsibility, equality, diversity, and non-discrimination
  • Take into account the ecological, social, economic, and cultural dimensions of sustainable development

In practical research work, openness is pursued according to UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science in the following areas:

  • Open scientific knowledge, including
    • Open research publications
    • Research data
    • Educational resources
    • Source codes and open-source software
    • Hardware
  • Open infrastructures
  • Open engagement of societal actors
  • Open dialogue with different communities
