Publisher's Guide – Information about publishing: Creative commons -licences

Creative Commons -licences

Creative Commons licenses give a standardized way to grant the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law. From the reuser’s perspective, the presence of a Creative Commons license on a copyrighted work answers the question what can I do with this work.

The CC-licence tells you how to reuse the publication

  • Creative Commons licenses are commonly used to define permissions..
  • CC licenses allow the author or data owner of a publication to define the degree of publicity and access rights to their work.
  • In CC licensing, the author must always be mentioned with the exception of the CC 0 license.
  • The Policy for open to scholarly publications recommends the use of a CC-BY licence, but for justified reasons, another CC licence may also be used.

Choosing a licence

CC-licence system consists of four terms (BY, NC, ND, SA). Six basic Creative Commons licences are based on four licence terms. Every licence has a BY-term, which means that the name of the author must always be mentioned properly.
