APA Style (7th edition)

The APA 7th edition citation style (American Psychological Association, 7th edition) is widely used, for example, in social sciences, behavioral sciences, and humanities. At the University of Oulu, the APA 7 citation style is commonly used in, for instance, Acta doctoral dissertations and theses.
The citation style defines the ways sources are cited in the text and how the reference list is formatted.

Reference list - APA Style (7th edition)

This section presents ways to create reference list entries using the APA 7th edition citation style (American Psychological Association, 7th edition).

APA guideBasic Principles of Reference List Entries
APA guide: Creating an APA Style Reference List
APA guide: Common Reference Examples
APA guideReference Examples (a broader range of examples)

Points to consider when creating a reference list:

  • Order references alphabetically. Guidelines for Alphabetical Arrangement of Letters and Sorting of Numerals and Other Symbols.
  • When the same author has multiple publications
    • from different years, list the older source first:
      Smith, J. (2024)
      Smith, J. (2025)
    • from the same year, include a lowercase letter after the year:
      Johnson, M. (2025a)
      Johnson, M. (2025b)
  • Ensure that the link to the publication’s DOI / permanent identifier / URL remains underlined (active) when your work is published online.
  • Apply a hanging indent.
  • Double-space the reference list, both within and between references. Do not add extra lines between references.

When writing in English, source references follow the rules of English grammar.

Book / Ebook

APA guideBook / Ebook References

Use the same formats for both print books and ebooks. Include in the reference

  • author(s),
  • year of publication,
  • book title (in italics),
  • edition information, if the publication is not the first edition,
  • publisher,
  • DOI or permanent identifier if the book has one.

When the book is an edited volume, list the editor(s) as the author(s), followed by (Ed.) or (Eds.). If the author is an organization, present the name as it appears in the publication. If there is no personal or organizational author, begin the reference with the title of the book.

Do not include the database URL or the name of the database in the reference.

Citing Authors With the Same Surname

Page numbers

APA guide: Paraphrases

If you are referring broadly to an entire work or study, a page number is generally not included. However, APA recommends adding a page number if it helps the reader locate the relevant part of the source, such as in a book.

APA guideCiting Specific Parts of a Source

Include page numbers when:

  • referring to an image, table, or other detailed information,
  • using a direct quotation.

(Smith, 2025, p. 10)
(Smith, 2025, pp. 11–14)

Use an en dash (–) between page ranges. Computer editing tip: En dashes

APA guideDirect Quotations of Material Without Page Numbers

If the source has no page numbers (e.g., an ebook without page numbers), refer to the chapter, subsection or paragraph.

(Smith, 2025, Chapter 4)
(Smith, 2025, Chapter 4.2)

(Smith, 2025, para. 5)

Paraphrasing

APA guideParaphrases
APA guide: Parenthetical Versus Narrative In-Text Citations

When paraphrasing (indirect quotations), a single sentence is cited either:

  • at the end of the sentence (parenthetical citation):
    Xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxx (Smith, 2025, p. 123)
    or
  • within the sentence (narrative citation), in which case the page number is added at the end of the sentence before the period:
    According to Smith (2025)... (p. 123).

If the citation applies to multiple sentences, it is sufficient to mention the author's name in the first sentence (narrative citation), as long as it is clear from the following sentences in the same paragraph that the same source is being used. A possible page number is added in parentheses at the end of the citation.

Smith (2025) describes... According to him... Smith also highlights... It can therefore be stated that... (pp. 11–14).

APA guideCiting Multiple Works

If you refer to multiple sources within the same paragraph, list them in alphabetical order within parentheses and separate the sources with a semicolon (;). If you are citing multiple works by the same author, place the oldest source first.

(Smith, 2025; Johnson, 2023; Williams, 2024)

(Smith, 2020; Smith, 2025)

Direct quatations

APA guide: Quotations

When making a short direct quote (under 40 words), it is placed within the sentence using quotation marks.

Xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxx "short direct quote" (Smith, 2025, p. 123).

When making a long direct quotation (at least 40 words), it is indented without quotation marks and formatted with increased line spacing.

Xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxx:

Long direct quotation. Long direct quotation. Long direct quotation. Long direct quotation. Long direct quotation. Long direct quotation. Long direct quotation. Long direct quotation. (Smith, 2025, p. 123)

Secondary Source

APA guide: Secondary Sources

If possible, use the primary source — that is, the publication in which the information was first reported.

A secondary source is acceptable when the original work is out of print, unavailable, or available only in a language that you do not understand. Include only the source you actually used in the reference list. Also, mention the original source in the in-text citation.

In-text citation: (Smith, 1982, as cited in Williams, 2014)
Reference list: Williams, P. (2014). Title. Journal, 1(1), 1-11.
